Obituary

Betty Jean Brown

June 24, 1938 – May 24, 2024

Betty Jean (Mitchell) Brown passed away May 24, 2024 at Billings Clinic in Billings, Montana, her loving husband by her side. Jean was born in Berwyn, Oklahoma on June 24, 1938, the middle child of Raymond Lee and Bertha G. (Caffman) Mitchell.

She grew up with one sister, Loretta and brother, Roy Mitchell. After high school graduation, Jean moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming with her mother and stepfather, Kenneth Andrews.

Jean attended beauty school in Laramie and contined to work in the area following graduation. Jean's mom and stepfather moved to Berlingame, California and she followed closely, landing in Melbray, California.

In the late summer of 1961, Jean met her future husband, Robert Eugene Brown, who was in the US Navy in Long Beach, California. On November 10, 1961 Jean and Bob were wed.

Jean was happy to work as a beauty operator and as a houswife. While Bob was out to sea, she came to Worland to live with her in-laws. Once Bob ended his military service the couple moved to Worland until Spring of 1965. That spring they moved to Jackson Hole to work for Snow King Ski Resort where Jean operated the snack bar. They lived in Jackson for four years and then returned to Worland where Bob worked for Halliburton and Jean was content to be a helpmate and love. She loved to garden, kept an immaculate home, and loved to spoil Bob. They were inseperable. After a reduction in force, Bob became a long haul truck driver and many times Jean would go along as his helper in tarping loads. They loved being together and enjoyed seeing much of the country.

After ending their trucking experience, they decided to try their hand as campground hosts for Gallatin Canyon Campgrounds up at Burgess Junction. They enjoyed their time there for the next twenty years.

Jean enjoyed gardening, and could grow most anything. She also enjoyed fishing and camping. One year, Jean and Bob went on a camping trip up the Big Horn Mountains. As they were preparing for bed they heard a noise in the campgound and Jean went out to investiage and shoo whatever it was out of the camp. Bob put his glasses on and shown the flashlight to see what Jean was swatting with the broom. He said, "Honey I wouldn't keep swatting that critter." Come to find out it was a young black bear, and they had lucked out that the momma bear wasn't around!

Jean was much loved and admired and will be missed very much. Bob says, "Sleep well my Love."

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Roy Lee Mitchell and a baby brother. Survivors include her loving husband of over 62 years, Bob; sister, Loretta Reinhardt of Colonia, New Jersey; sister-in-law, Becky Anzalone; 11 nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews.
