Obituary

Del Rhene Kirby

February 9, 1952- August 6, 2024

Del Rhene Kirby, surrounded by his family, peacefully completed his journey on earth and returned to his Heavenly Father on August 6, 2024.

Born on February 9, 1952, to Dell Bair Kirby and Guelda Maurine (Thompson) Kirby, Del grew up in the Rogue River Valley. In his youth, he was known by his middle name, Rhene. He cherished exploring the mountains behind his home, a passion that continued throughout his life and led to many cherished family adventures in the great outdoors.

From a young age, Del enjoyed carving small pieces of wood with his pocketknife. This hobby evolved into a lifelong passion, resulting in intricate wooden art and beautiful furniture.

Del's formative years were marked by his active involvement in the family business, The Kirby Fountain Lunch and Diner. Athletic and talented in all sports, he excelled in wrestling, becoming a state champion in his division and earning a full scholarship. Del attended Oregon State University for two years before transferring to the University of Puget Sound, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1976.

Choosing a career in Occupational Therapy, Del dedicated over 44 years to this field, specializing in Geriatrics. In 1978, he organized the first Geriatric Olympics in the Puget Sound region, bringing together several nursing homes. Known for his innovative spirit, Del crafted personalized adaptive equipment, helping his patients achieve greater independence and joy. One of his greatest pleasures was making a meaningful difference in their lives.

In November 1978, Del met his soulmate, Diane (Di), at a dance. Their connection was immediate, and they were engaged just two weeks later. They married in the Salt Lake City Temple in April 1979. Together, they built a wonderful life in Washington state, raising four children. In April 2021, they moved to Wyoming to be closer to their children and grandchildren, where Del spent his remaining days surrounded by family.

Del had a profound love for his Savior, Jesus Christ, and a deep testimony of His central role in his life. He found joy in serving others and held many positions within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including a particularly meaningful role as Bishop of the Stadium Ward in Tacoma, WA. Del hoped to share the light of the Savior's love through his service and interactions.

Del was preceded in death by his parents, Dell and Maurine Kirby, and his brother Ralph W. Kirby. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 45 years, Di (Bremner) Kirby, their eight wonderful children—Rena (Dan) Scott, Jennifer (Richard) Mehegan, Amber (Dennis) Harding, Matt (Myesha) Kirby—and 14 amazing grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews, brothers- and sisters-in-law, and his two sisters, Shawna (Van) Perry and Pamela (Randy) Shelman.

A memorial service will be planned at a later date. Del's family is deeply grateful for the joy, friendship, and love that all who knew him brought into his life.
