Obituary

Maxine Stine

April 14, 1927- September 13, 2025

After a long and rich life, Maxine Stine passed away peacefully in her home at the age of 98 on September 13, 2025. Born on April 14th, 1927, to Aara and Mabel Knisely, Maxine was the youngest of six children. She spent most of her childhood in Worland, graduated from Worland High School and then attended the University of Wyoming. Maxine married the love of her life, Richard Stine, when he returned home from WWII. They soon started a family and had four children.

The Stine family had a love for the outdoors, fishing, camping, hunting and hiking. This led Richard and Maxine to start a retail sporting goods business, The Outdoorsman, in 1953. The Stine family continued to run the store for 65 years. To expand their business, they helped fund and run, Meadowlark Ski Area in 1963, in which all the children learned to ski and work there. Maxine even taught youth ski lessons to kids from Worland, Thermopolis, and Buffalo.

Maxine had many interests throughout life. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, family gatherings, decorating her house for every season, tending to her lovely flower gardens, painting, and most of all, quilting. If you knew Maxine, you knew she spent countless hours painting and sewing on each unique piece. If you're a lucky owner of a quilt or painting, give it a special spot on the wall, or curl up with the quilt and know they were made to last.

Maxine was a kind and giving soul, in her later years she loved sitting in her kitchen nibbling on a treat, watching her backyard birds and squirrels. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Richard and son, Robert.

She is survived by her children, Dan (Susie) Stine of Worland, Stephen (Judy) Stine of Bull head City, Arizona and Melanie Stine of Worland; grandchildren: Cori (Tom) Pearl, Robert (Jaimie) Stine, Chloe Stine (Nick Bower), Jay Stine, Vicki (Larry) Tellez and 10 great-grandchildren.
