Edgar “Dan” Stark died on March 28, 2006, at Canyon Hills Manor, Thermopolis, Wyoming. Dan was born on March 11, 1928 at Ft. Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Lt. Col. Edgar Daniel and Claire (Harrington) Stark. As and “army brat” he attended many schools, graduating from Colorado State University in 1958. He also attended Menard’s Military School, West Point, University of Colorado and Officer’s Training School in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma.
Dan served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army during the Korean Conflict. During his service career he was a Reconnaissance Officer “forward observer” on Heart Break Ridge, Bloody Ridge and Pork Chop Hill. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Korean Service medal with three bronze stars awarded by the South Korean Government, United Nations Military Service medal, National Defense Service Medal, presidential Unit Citation Commemorative medal and Overseas Commemorative Korean War Service Medal.
Upon graduation from C.S.U., he married Margaret “Meg” Coats. He became employed by the Bureau of Land Management in Cheyenne, Wyoming. After 3 years in Cheyenne, Dan transferred to the Worland BLM Office. He spent 25 years in BLM service in Worland as a Realty Specialist and in Billings, Montana as the Chief of Lands Adjudication.
Dan is survived by his wife, Meg, of Worland; son Ed III and grandson Dan IV of Jackson, Wyoming; granddaughters, Desiree Stark and Mariah Stark of Salmon, Idaho; “adopted daughter” Theresa Bader of Worland; sister Patricia Hofman of Boulder, Colorado; and his faithful lead dog, Spot.
Dan was a man of honor and great integrity, who passed these principles through all he did and to everyone he met. He was a gentle man who loved the outdoors and did everything possible to make for a better environment. He was a member of the VFW, Legion, Elks, Society of American Foresters, Public Lands Foundation, Billings BLM Retirees Club, Society of Range Management, and served on the Board of the Cowboy Red Cross in Worland. He was a member of Worland’s Eohippus Club that started the first Christmas basket program.
