Gary Dean Pickerel
September 28, 1952 – March 31, 2026
Gary Dean Pickerel, 73, passed away on March 31, 2026, at Worland Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Worland, Wyoming, following complications from a recent stroke.
He was born on September 28, 1952, in Riverton, Wyoming, to Robert Joe and Nadine Thiel (Torpey) Pickerel. Due to his father's work, Gary moved frequently throughout his school years. He later entered the workforce, beginning in the oil fields alongside his late best friend, Jerry Michaels.
In 1984, Gary met Diana Butler through mutual friends in Worland, and the two were married soon after. From this union, his daughter, Ashley, was born. The family made their home in Worland for many years before Gary and Diana later divorced.
Gary eventually began working for Mel's Plumbing, where he became known for his strong work ethic and dedication. He worked long hours, often seven days a week, from sunup to sundown until his first stroke in 2019 led to his retirement. His work was a central part of his life, and he took great pride in what he did.
Gary was known for his firecracker personality, a trait that followed him from childhood into adulthood. As a true redhead, he was spirited, straightforward, and full of humor. He loved to joke and had a way of making people laugh; you always knew where you stood with him.
In his younger years, Gary enjoyed fishing and floating the river with his close friend Jerry. He had a lifelong passion for anything related to cars; whether he was building model cars, admiring muscle cars, or attending car shows, if it was fast, it caught his attention. He also wrecked his fair share of motorcycles along the way.
After his retirement, Gary was a familiar face around town and could often be found at Bloedorn Lumber, where he made near-daily stops, usually for his large cans of Red Bull.
While Gary faced challenges in family relationships, he did the best he could with what he knew. Later in life, he formed a special bond with his grandchildren, who brought him great pride and meant a great deal to him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his close friend, Jerry Michaels.
Gary is survived by his daughter, Ashley (Steve) Rollins of Worland; his sisters, Carol Helzer and Shelley Stephan; and his grandchildren, Adisyn Rollins, Brinlyn, and Caisyn.
