John H. Atkinson

February 24, 1927 - May 2, 2008

John Harold "Pinky" Atkinson passed away on Friday, May 2, 2008 at the Washakie Medical Center after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his family.

Pinky was born on February 24, 1927 in Worland, WY to William and Margaret (Wilson) Atkinson. He attended school in Ten Sleep. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from January 1949 until October 1952. He served in both Japan and Korea. Following his time in the service, he worked at several ranches in the area before returning to the family ranch, south of Ten Sleep. He took over the ranch in 1960 until 1991. Pinky and Dorene retired to Worland where they have resided until the time of his death.

He married Dorene Heron on August 19, 1957. They had three daughters, Jennie, Trish and Sandy.

His hobbies included spending time with his family, spending countless days at Billy's Flat, riding around in his ATV, watching sheep and fixing fence. He enjoyed watching his grandsons play sports. He was also a member of the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; brothers-in-law Marvin Tolman, Robert, Jimmie, and Edwin Heron and sister-in-law Dola Buffington.

He is survived by his wife, Dorene, of 50 years, daughters: Jennie Atkinson (Aron Mullis), Trish Atkinson (Steve Swander) and granddaughter Kelly (Dan) Ritz, Sandy (Jim) Beck and grandsons, Jonathan and Jayson. Also surviving him are his brother Wilson (Maggie) Atkinson and their family, Lonna Tolman and her family, and numerous friends.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will not be held at this time. A celebration of Pinky's life will be held this summer at Billy's Flat. Memorials may be made in his name to Big Horn Enterprises in care of Bryant Funeral Home, PO Box 524, Worland, WY 82401. Bryant Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
