Margaret Farlien Scott

Margaret Farlien Scott died April 6, 2008 at the Worland Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center following complications of a stroke. She was 92.

She was born on March 5, 1916 in Worland at the home of her parents, Edith Templin and Dr. Jake Farlien, early pioneers of the Worland area. She attended school in Worland and graduated as valedictorian of the 1933 class. Margaret attended Colorado Woman’s College in Denver before transferring to the University of Wyoming her sophomore year. She belonged to Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and Phi Sima lota, a foreign language club. In 1937 she received her B.S. degree in biology.

Following her education at the University of Wyoming, she moved back to Worland and was employed in various positions: clerking in a dress store, working for the county assessor, and teaching 8th grade. It was during this time that she met her husband, Elmer Scott. They married on November 20, 1938 at the Worland Methodist Church. In May 1939 they moved to Denver where Scotty was a title attorney in the Department of Agriculture. Her first daughter was born in Denver. They were transferred to Washington D.C. in 1940, and lived in Arlington, Virginia. Her last three children were born in Washington D.C. In 1950 they moved back to Worland permanently where Scotty set up his law practice.

Scotty and Margaret loved to travel, and had wonderful trips with friends to Japan and Hong Kong, Europe, Alaska, Mexico and the Northeast. For many years they spent the winter in Arizona and California. The family spent many happy years at their cabin in the Big Horn Mountains. Margaret loved to play golf and was a member of the High Noon Golf League. She was active in the Worland Methodist Church and belonged to the Mary and Martha Circle, United Methodist Women, and Helen’s Fellowship. She was a member of the Worland Historical Society. She had been a member of AAUW, PEO and various bridge clubs. Margaret was an excellent gardener and always had beautiful flowers. Many of the yellow chrysanthemums around town came from her yard. She enjoyed playing the piano throughout her life. She was a fulltime mother and loved raising her family. She dearly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Margaret was also interested in genealogy and traced her family roots back to the 1600’s. She remained very active until her stroke, when she moved to the Pioneer Home in Thermopolis in 2007. Due to failing health, she moved back to Worland where she lived at Worland Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center until the time of her death. She will be remembered for her kind and loving spirit.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1996 and her brother, Lloyd in 1929.

Margaret is survived by two daughters, Judy (Larry) Emmons of Ten Sleep and Jean (Sam) Piel of Worland, two sons, Lloyd Scott of Worland and Rick (Carol) Scott of Greeley, Colorado. She has seven grandchildren: Deb Saiyo of Grass Valley, CA, Kate Emmons of Poway, CA, Scott Emmons of San Francisco, CA, Amy Piel of New York City, NY, Sarah Douglas of Thornton, CO, Becky Griswold of Los Angeles, CA, and Ann Scott of Greeley, CO. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren.
