Peter "Pete" Andrew Salzman

Pete A. Salzman 93, of Worland, died on January 23, 2000 at Community Care of America in Worland.

Pete was born on November 23, 1906 in Mariandahl ( Samaria ) Russia to Joseph F. and Barbara (Gross) Salzman.

His parents, Sister Mary, Brother John and he entered the United States June 15, 1908 at Pembina, North Dakota. They lived in Hayes, Kansas until 1911 when they moved to Loveland, Colorado and then on to Worland on March 20, 1917.

Pete married Catherine Lehman on December 1, 1929 in Denver, CO. He worked on the Holly Sugar Farm immediately south of town and Catherine cooked for numerous hired men until March 1934 when he began farming for himself on 40 acres on West River Road. In 1936 he rented 220 acres north of Worland and in 1941 when the Holly sugar beet crop averaged 12.5 tons per acre his beets were 24 tons per acre.

In 1944 he owned 10% of the fat lambs on the largest single trainload of livestock to be shipped from the Big Horn Basin to Eastern Markets.

In the intervening years Peter and Catherine had sons Gene Allen Salzman of Glenrock, Wyoming, Joe P. (Elayne) Salzman of Worland and Catherine (Raymond) Gotfredson of Carbondale, Colorado who survive him. Four grandchildren, Connie Jo Clark, Curtis Salzman both of Worland, David Salzman of Los Vegas, NV and Cheryl Hergart of Worland, five great grandchildren, two sisters – Lena Ogg and Anne Piel of Worland, also survive him.

He was a Charter member of the Wyoming Pure Seed Growers now Big Horn Co-op, served on the first Washakie County ASCS Committee and served on the Ten Sleep School Board for several years as he owned and operated a ranch south of Ten Sleep for 22 years.

He ended his working career by owning and operating a custom swathing business in the summer months and operating the river pumps for Holly Sugar during the processing campaigns from 1968 through 1971.

He was interesting to visit with concerning some of the early history of Worland and the Basin. He made a verbal documentary, which is on file at the Washakie Museum.

He was preceded in death by his wife Catherine in 1995, parents, four brothers-John, Nick, Joe and Leo. Three sisters – Mary Dierks, Eve Ruby and Rose Lamb.
