Obituary
Phillip Charles Mullis
October 14, 1959- April 23, 2025
Phillip Charles Mullis, 65, of Ten Sleep, Wyoming, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2025, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings, Montana, surrounded by his family.
Born October 14, 1959, in Alma, Nebraska, to Morris Melvin and Lana Laree (Hall) Mullis, Phillip was a true son of the land. From a young age, he was drawn to the open sky, the rhythm of hoofbeats, and the quiet work of tending to animals. He graduated from high school in 1978 and went straight to where he felt most at home—on the ranch.
Phillip spent his life working across the rugged landscapes of Wyoming, doing what he did best: ranching. He worked lambing and ranching for Bob Redland, sheepherding for Jim Anderson, and fixing fences in Muddy Gap for Doc Baker. But perhaps his most legendary title was that of "Chicken Sheriff" under Bobby Brubaker—keeping watch over chickens at night, protecting them from hungry predators. You could count on Phil like you could count on the sunrise.
He was a man of many words and strong hands—the kind of rancher who could mend a fence with baling wire and prayer. Though he never married or had children of his own, Phillip was a beloved brother, uncle, and friend to many. He loved his parents deeply, held a quiet affection for the simpler things in life—mountain air, good horses, a well-worn hat—and lived life with grit, humility, and a deep respect for the land.
Phillip was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew, Pebble Stone. He is survived by his two brothers, Norman (Penny) Mullis of Ten Sleep and Aron (Eileen) Mullis of Worland, who remember him with love and pride.
