Scott George Shafer

Scott George Shafer lost his life on June 25, 2006 in a rafting accident at the North Platte River water park in Casper, Wyoming. Scott was born the beloved son of Mary Ellen and Steve Shafer on March 9, 1985 in Worland, Wyoming. He lived in Burley, Idaho for a short time when he was a toddler then his family returned to Worland where he attended Apple Academy, Eastside Elementary, Worland Middle School and graduated from Worland High School in 2003. He then went to Casper College where he received his Associate of Applied Science degree in Aviation in May 2006.

He is survived by his father Steve W. Shafer of Casper, WY and his mother Mary Ellen (Jerry) Girard of Worland, WY; brother Chris (Lisa) Wallace of Sheridan, WY; sisters Cindy (Gary) Craft of Sheridan, Stephanie Shafer and Melissa Law of Casper; step-brother Jay (Sherri) Girard of Dillon, MT and a step-sister Dina (Thom) Trang of Dillon, MT; aunt Ginny (Ole) Lear of Thermopolis, WY; uncles Wes (Brenda) Shafer of Casper, James (Susan) Russell of Casper, and Charles M. Russell of Boston, MA; great-aunts Sallie (Roy) Comstock of Calais, ME, and Leona Cowger of Thermopolis, WY; great-uncle James Russell of Norwood, MA; nieces & nephews Jamie and Grady Craft , Levi Wallace, Alicia, Zack and Isaiah Girard, Nate, Mikaela and Abigail Trang and also numerous cousins.

As a boy, Scott dreamed of working in aviation. He started as a line boy for G&W Aviation in Thermopolis during his junior year in high school. As a senior he worked for Sky Aviation as a flagger and loader in a spray plan operation. While attending Casper College, he worked as a line technician for Trajen Flight Support and also for Skywest Airlines at the Casper airport.

He obtained his private, instrument and commercial pilot ratings and became a flight instructor for Wyoming Air Corporation during his last year at Casper College. He loved teaching what had become a passion for him.

An avid fisherman and hunter, Scott loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, boating, water skiing, snow boarding, playing golf and riding his motorcycle. He loved life and lived it to the fullest; he never thought twice about trying something new if it sounded fun or offered an opportunity for adventure.

He was a great friend to all who met him and had a wonderful way with people, old and young. He was the best son, brother, uncle, nephew and friend anyone could ever hope to have and will be dearly missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a contribution to a scholarship. The Scott Shafer Memorial Scholarship will be set up through the Casper College Foundation and the Scott Shafer Memorial Aviation Scholarship Fund will be through First Interstate Bank in Casper.
