Sharon Markillie
June 12, 1940- July 25, 2024
Sharon Markillie, a beloved wife, mother, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Thermopolis, Wyoming on July 25, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on June 12, 1940, in Prineville, Oregon, to Vivian Wardell and Ada E. (Dalton) Bennett, the youngest of two children.
Sharon grew up in Lakeview, Oregon, before moving to Brookings, Oregon, graduating from high school in 1958. During the summer of her sophomore year Sharon met Bert Markillie. Their chance encounter while driving around with friends blossomed into a deep and lasting romance. They were married shortly after their high school graduation, embarking on a journey together that would shape the rest of their lives.
Through Sharon's introduction, Bert embraced the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, leading to his baptism in 1963. Their love and faith were solidified when they were sealed together in the Salt Lake City Temple on August 16, 1965. This commitment to each other and their faith remained a cornerstone of their life together.
In 2019, Sharon and Bert relocated to Thermopolis. Her generosity extended beyond her family to her community, where she volunteered with the Meals on Wheels program, embodying her caring spirit.
Sharon's talents were many. An avid bowler, she once achieved a remarkable 299 game. She also had a passion for cooking, knitting, crocheting, sewing, and was renowned for her baking skills, especially her delectable cinnamon rolls. Her homemade treats, often shared with family and even the dogs, were a reflection of her nurturing and generous nature.
Sharon took immense pride in her role as a mother and wife. Her dedication to her family was evident in everything she did, from the comforting meals she prepared to the loving support she provided.
Travel was a cherished part of Sharon and Bert's life together. They proudly explored all 50 states in their motor home, creating cherished memories along the way.
Sharon will be remembered as a quiet, sweet, and kind soul whose greatest joy was her family. Her legacy of love and devotion will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents; son, Todd Edward and sister, Schell Johnson.
Survivors include her loving husband, Bert; son, Scott Markillie of Thermopolis; daughters, Cheryl Markillie of Thermopolis and Ronda (Luis) Valiente of Dracut, Massachusetts; grandchildren: Charles, Elena, Luis, Cheryl, Madison, Camryn and 5 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday August 1, 2024 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Thermopolis.
